Matala

Matala
1/6
DESCRIPTION:
Visit the famous beach of Matala, 68 km southwest of Heraklion, one of the most popular tourist destinations, located near Phaistos, the second largest palace of the Minoan civilization.
This is the place where Zeus, in the form of a bull, swam ashore with Europa on his back before dragging her to Gortys.
Both the Minoans and the Romans used this place as their harbor.
However, for most people, Matala means only one thing: hippies. Back in the late 1960s and 1970s, this small town was a colony of "flower children" living in caves that were once Roman tombs. Many of them have stairs, beds, windows, suggesting that they were used as living quarters.
Here we will enjoy crystal clear water, warm sun and lunch by the sea, and later we will be able to explore prehistoric caves carved into the steep cliffs of the area.
